Rt. Rev. Ferdinand Brossart, D.D.

The Most Reverend Ferdinand Brossart, D.D., became Bishop of Covington. The son of Ferdinand and Catherine Brossart, he was born in the village of Buchelberg in Rehenish, Bavaria on October 19th, 1849. When he was 2 years old, he and his family immigrated to Price Hill in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended St. Michael Parish. In 1861, the family moved to Gubser's Mill, Kentucky. At that time, the 12-Mile congregation had a log church dedicated to St. Peter and a school, but no resident pastor. He received his First Holy Communion and was confirmed in the first log church. In August 1864, St. Peter's received their first resident pastor, Reverend John Stephany, a newly ordained priest. After completing his elementary studies, the Most Reverend Ferdinand Brossart, D.D. attended St. Francis High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Then he entered St. Mary Seminary in Price Hill to prepare for the priesthood. Bishop Toebbe ordained him on September 1st, 1872 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Covington, Kentucky. Father Brossart presided over the church at Immaculate Conception in Newport, Kentucky, and then St. Edward Church in Cynthiana, Kentucky. In 1879, he became pastor of St. Paul Parish in Lexington, the only parish in the city at that time. In July 1888, he became pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral in Covington, Kentucky. He assumed the handling of the financial burden and details of selecting the stained glass windows for the cathedral. Following the death of Bishop Maes, Father Brossart became the fourth Bishop of Covington on January 25, 1916. He was 67 years of age at that time. It was Bishop Brossart who installed the communion railing of Carrara Marble. He chose and directed the installation of the Stations of the Cross. The pictures for the stations were taken from an oil painting and reproduced in ceramic tile of a porcelain character. He insisted on establishing a St. Vincent de Paul Society in the Diocese. After 7 years of faithful service, ill health forced Bishop Brossart to resign on March 2nd, 1923. He went into retirement at St. Anne Convent, Melbourne, and died on August 6th, 1930 at 80 years of age. He was buried at the place of his choice, the cemetery at St. Anne Convent.
